Creative Thursday: Being Creative When I Don’t Feel Like It

Creative Thursday: Being Creative When I Don’t Feel Like It

Posted on June 5, 2014August 24, 2016 by trinitychristianlifecoaching

There are days that no matter how much I look at the list of work to be done I just cannot get inspired.  Still that list is calling my name, I’m on a deadline and it has to be done.   brainstorming

So how do you overcome the slump?  These are some suggestions that I’ve discovered work.

  1. Just start—often once I get started and push through those first few minutes of procrastination, I discover that I get into the groove and can move forward.

    music
    music changes your mood
  2. Find a new location—sometimes I just need a change in venue or scenery to get the mental juices flowing.
  3. Turn off all distractions—this includes the TV, internet {if you work on the computer}, phone and anything else that can attract your attention and hinder you from completing your job.  For instance, I’m writing this at an internet free location, so that I will not be distracted by social media, email or anything else that might distract my train of thought.
  4. Brainstorming—sometimes when those ideas won’t come, I sit down and just begin to write what comes to my mind.  Half of it may be junk, but the longer I sit there the more I discover my brain begins to work and nuggets of ideas start to pop up.
  5. Turn on music—music often motivates me and helps me to concentrate and block out surrounding noises.  Michael Hyatt states that he keeps a mix of soundtracks to write by.  take a walk
  6. Meditation—often just getting quiet and meditating or praying allows my mind to begin to energize itself and ideas begin to flow.  Also, seeking God’s guidance is always a good idea when beginning a new project, regardless if it’s a song, story, sculpture, graphic design, dance or any other creative outlet.
  7. Exercise—exercise releases endorphins that trigger both your mood and memory.  Studies have proven that exercise helps you to think clearer and makes you happier.  After exercising, give yourself time to create and see what you come up with.

What other ways do you jumpstart your creative slump?
